(File Transfer Protocol)

You have unlimited access to your account via FTP 24-hours a day to set up and maintain your interent site. You can work on CFM, ASP, HTM or HTML documents, graphics and scripts locally and then upload files to your site when ready.

The first step is to download, unzip and install the ftp software you'll need. For PC users we recommend ws_ftp intended for Windows users. Mac users should download Fetch. A modest license is required for the use of each package. Please visit the following sites for details regarding licensing fees:

You can download an evaluation copy of WinZip (32 bit version) by visiting their site at winzip.com to download the latest version and make arrangements to pay their licensing fee.

The Professional Version of ws_ftp is offered by Ipswitch and may be purchased at ipswitch.com

Fetch is offered for licensing by Dartmouth College and may be purchased at dartmouth.edu


Instructions and Helpful Hints

    PC Users .... ws_ftp ... Installation and Setup

  1. Once installed open by clicking on the WS_FTP icon. [Start ,Programs, Accessories, WS_FTP]
  2. Select "New" and enter a new "Profile Name"
  3. Host Name/Address will be your site address [www.yourdomain.com, etc.]
  4. Host Type .. select Automatic detect or Microsoft NT
  5. User ID ... enter
  6. Password ... enter
  7. Account ... leave blank
  8. Comment ... leave blank
  9. Select "Startup" tab
  10. Initial Remote Host Directory will be your directory on the East Carolina Network. If you don't know the exact directory leave it blank. When you connect you'll be taken to the default directory we have setup for you.
  11. Initial Local Directory is the directory on your PC where you store your internet files, graphics, etc.
  12. Select "Apply" and "OK" to save your settings and to connect to your directory on our network servers.
    The First Connection ...

  1. Once connected you'll see a split screen with your files on the East Carolina Network server on the right and your local PC directory on the left.
  2. You may transfer files back and forth by simply highlighting the file of interest and clicking the arrow between the screens to transfer the selected file. Entire folders containing all of their files may be transferred as easily as a single file ... simply select the folder you want to transfer and click the appropriate arrow. WARNING ... files and folders may be overwritten if you are not careful. This could wipe out your entire presentation ... so remember to THINK before you transfer a file to your directory on the East Carolina Network servers!
  3. Images should always be transferred as "binary" files. We prefer to simply leave the "Binary" button checked.
  4. When finished, "Close" the connection and "Exit" the program.

    Macintosh Users .... Fetch ... Installation and Setup

  1. Once installed open by clicking on the Fetch icon.
  2. Select "Customize" and "New Shortcut"
  3. Name can be any name you choose to identity the shortcut .. like your company name.
  4. Type is either "Folder" or "Unknown"
  5. Host is your domain name. For example, www.yourdomain.com, etc.
  6. User ID ... enter
  7. Password ... enter
  8. Directory: This is the directory on the East Carolina Network where your files are located. If you don't know the exact directory just drop us a line and we'll e-mail it to you.
  9. Select "OK" to save your settings.
  10. If you'd like to keep this setting as your "default setting", go to "Customize" and "Preferences" where you'll find a lookup allowing the default selection.
  11. Exit Fetch entirely and reopen it by clicking on the Fetch icon. Your new settings will be displayed and you're ready to connect by selecting "OK"
    The First Connection ...

  1. Once connected you'll see your files on the East Carolina Network server. You may "get" a file or directory by highlighting it and selecting "get". You'll be prompted to indicate the directory on your Mac where you'd like the file transferred.
  2. You may place a file on the East Carolina Network server by selecting "put". You will be prompted to select the file on your Mac you'd like to transfer.
  3. WARNING ... files and folders may be overwritten if you are not careful. This could wipe out your entire presentation ... so remember to THINK before you transfer a file to your directory on the East Carolina Network servers!
  4. Images should always be transferred as "binary" files.
  5. When finished, select "File" and "Quit" to break the connection with the server and exit the program.
