The East Carolina Network  The East Carolina Network is the internet arm of Ruffin Associates, Inc. [RAI], a general management and computer technology consulting firm engaged in organizational development and strategic business planning including opportunity / risk analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of computerized technologies into today's business environment. Services include high speed digital connections for the web, state-of-the-art internet virtual hosting, domain registration, site design, electronic commerce, e-mail systems, marketing and ongoing maintenance. RAI's original consulting business was founded in 1987 and expanded to include the Internet Group in mid 1994 to address the technical, software, and oversight needs of small and medium sized companies interested in pursuing electronic commerce on the Internet. The RAI Internet Group provides a comprehensive program of products and services aimed at establishing a corporate presence on the Internet for its client companies. The company owns, administers and operates a NT based network with its wide area network (WAN) high speed internet connection provided by Sprint. In 1994 RAI created The North Carolina's Outer Banks Internet Initiative (NCOB) as a vehicle to provide helpful information to visitors and friends of North Carolina's Outer Banks. It, along with the Outer Banks E-Mail Centre, began "live" operations on the Internet in April of 1995. Today this project consistently receives in excess of 25,000,000 server "hits" annually and responds to approximately ten thousand e-mail inquiries each month. Internet sites such as NCOB (and now it's sister site ... The Northeastern North Carolina Internet Initiative) provide vehicles to show off the historical, cultural and eco-tourism advantages and attractions of these regions while introducing area businesses to internet concepts and electronic commerce. By positioning local merchants to unselfishly offer information and services to internet visitors interested in the region, opportunities are created to expand their business horizons beyond the local economic environment. Further, a close association with these "internet gateway" sites has become increasingly important for businesses wishing to improve their chances of being found on the internet.
